In a book that Lt. James Parker wrote (called Last Man Out) he talked about Ayers. How he was a tenderhearted, nice, 18 year old guy. A guy that responded to praise, never complained and ultimately gave his life for his country. He also said that it always hurt Ayers during mail time because for some reason he never got any mail, despite the fact that he wrote someone every couple of days. I'm not quite sure why I'm on this quest to find out about him. Something about the way Lt.Parker describes him just keeps tugging at my heart. I wish I had been alive and know him during the 60's. I served in 3 trans companies while in country....The 597th(20 oct 66), the 64th Trans(10 Apr670 and the 88th Trans (6Aug67). I was the sent to FT.Devens Mass..I know faces and not names. I don't like that feeling. I remember sneeking to downtown Pleiku after dark, getting plastered and seeking back in to the co. compound WITHOUT getting shot. I was with others who were also lucky.
