Message is: I am attempting to write biographies for the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located in Midland/Odessa, Texas. I am attempting to locate information on David Leonard Boggs who was KIA 17 December 1967. This soldier had listed Odessa, Texas as his home of record. However, there is some controversy on how this might have happened. According to records available from some researchers is that he was originally from Martins Ferry, Ohio. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Hildred A. Boggs. The family moved from Ohio to Portland, Oregon in 1961 or thereabouts. David was the second of nine children. He supposedly told his family he was leaving Portland to go to Dallas, Texas to join the army in late 1965 or early 1966. The family did not see him again until he was reported to be KIA. At that time, his parents wanted him to be buried in a family plot in Martin's Ferry, Ohio. With help from the Army and people in Portland to include funeral home personnel, the body was shipped to Ohio and the family received aid to attend his funeral. Any information as to how this soldier may have listed Odessa, Texas as his HOR would be welcomed. He is listed on the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial and all other military casualaty information cites Odessa, Texas.

While in the Ba Long Valley we [A/1/61] received an emergency call and provided cover fire as they left a ridge crawling with NVA. Message is: I am researching information to be listed as a part of a biography on David Leonard Boggs, who was killed in Binh Thy, Vietnam in December 1967. He was with the 101st ABN. David was originally from Marble Falls, Ohio. He was the 2nd of 9 children. Either his mother died or his father's first wife died and she was buried in Marble Falls in a family plot. The family ended up in Portland, Oregon in the early 60's and the father was disabled. Sometime in 1965 or 1966, David left home and told his family he was driving to Dallas, Texas to enlist in the Army. His family did not see him again until he was killed. For some reason, he listed Odessa, Texas as his home of record. There appears to be no logical reason for this. However, David is listed on our county memorial and also on the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial. When he was killed, according to records in Oregon, his body was shipped to Portland. The father wanted his son to be buried next to his former wif! e in Ohio. It appears that the Army and the local people in Portland arranged to have the body shipped to Ohio and also helped the family go to Ohio for David's funeral. Any information would be helpful.
