Message is: Maybe someone can help me locate something from back in the 50Æs. I am hoping to find the record of an original patch or have a replica of it made. It had the face of a monkey with an innocent grin and a halo over its head.This patch was given to the crewmembers of the USS Antares AK258. I cannot seem to find it and would like to replace it and have it put on a cap.The USS Antares, a supply ship, picked up the Barbary ape in Gibraltar, being a place where these apes were all over everywhere on the ôRock.ö The Barbary ape, with no tail,was a gift from the British Admiralty bestowed to some zoo in the state of Tennessee.We were requested to carry the ape aboard for the trip to the states, which happened about 1957 or 1958 in the winter. During the entire trip the monkey was quiet when the appointed hand fed and cared for him. By and By I am of the opinion that he was waiting the opportune moment that he could leap from the cage and be free to climb from wall to rock to limb, as he once had done.That moment came when we docked in Brooklyn, NY. Captain Miller had invited the Press to come aboard to do a story and photography on the ôgift.ö After the photographer from the ôLive Brooklyn Eagleö suggested the cage be opened for a better picture, the ape bolted like lightning out of the cage. The next couple of days were spent trying to recapture the monkey. We were the only Navy ship to begin what was called a ôMonkey Watch.ö The ôMonkey Watchö were positioned on the pier, alongside the ship, armed with catch nets and flash lights. A local animal expert was called and the ape came out after either getting hungry or just giving up. Things went back to normal after we caught the little renegade.I remember laughing as I stood and watched as the monkey leapt from the cage to the shipÆs rigging, boom-to-boom, to the mast. We were helpless to run after him and I guess he had made a monkey out of the Captain and us. Captain Miller was a good man and an old salt from Wyoming who deserved better than to have his ship called the ôMonkey Ship, but I guess he got over it and had some patches made for the shipÆs crew.
