At Wilburton, Oklahoma
I am a member of the Veterans Project, nine miles due south of Wilburton, Oklahoma, on about 800 acres of timber land. It does not fit for everyone but made for any Vets who just need a quiet lot to put a mobile home or cabin on. It is well organized and has a meeting hall and a museum.
The buildings were built by WPA and CCC years ago and are like new since they were built from native stone. There is a huge picnic ground and shelter down by the entrance. They have bingo on Tuesday evenings and church on Sunday in the meeting hall.
A creek runs through it, and it is next to a WMA (Wildflife Management Area). Many people really like it down there; and it only costs $200.00 to join for life, with no dues or assessments. You can build your own cabins or buy one for sale by another Vet's estate. It is also Tax Free, which some feel is really good; and the Board protects the tax-exempt status.
The current Board President is a retired Navy man and former police officer. The Colony is a good place for those of small means to go and set up a quiet place in the forest to survive in peace.
Security there is very good, and they have their own fire department in addition to services from the local County. A State College is at Wilburton; and people who qualify to work at the prison at McAlester, OK, have only about a 30-minute drive to that location.
The Department of Corrections is short by 200 employees and is hiring Correctional Officers constantly. This makes a good second or third career for anyone living at the Colony. Veterans are given preference on tests and in employment, and there are other job possibilities in good driving distance from the Colony.
Some resources are required to make it there. The lot and land are free.
